Long-Term Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries

For some injuries, the recovery process is simple. But not always. Catastrophic injuries have a longstanding impact on the quality of life of the victim. One of the most commonly occurring forms of catastrophic injuries is what is known as a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. Some symptoms of moderate to severe TBI may occur many years after the accident occurred. Today, we will explain some of the long-term symptoms of traumatic brain injuries.

Long-Term Symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injuries

Some victims of traumatic brain injuries will have symptoms years after the accident. Here are some of those long-term symptoms.

Chronic Fatigue

Fatigue is often a difficult symptom to attribute to one particular cost. It could be caused by a number of different factors, such as sleep hygiene, lifestyle, and a wide range of psychological conditions. Keep in mind that chronic fatigue is also one of the most prevalent long-term symptoms of TBI.

Chronic fatigue is not something you should take lightly. It can cause or compound additional psychological issues in the wake of a traumatic brain injury.

Headaches

Unlike other traumatic brain injury symptoms, headaches actually have a tendency to get worse as time goes on. This may be because, as the more severe short-term symptoms of the injury recede into memory, headaches become more noticeable.

Frequent headaches or migraines are often one of the last symptoms of traumatic brain injuries to disappear. Over time, they can have a significant impact on the quality of life of the victim.

Seizures

Frequently, a traumatic brain injury can lead to what is known as post-traumatic epilepsy. For individuals who had never experienced seizures prior to their TBI, they can end up becoming a lifelong concern for the victim. In fact, TBIs are the leading cause of epilepsy in individuals between the ages of 15 and 24.

Miscellaneous Psychological Consequences

The physical consequences of traumatic brain injuries are frequently easier to recognize than the psychological ones. But they are equally important. Here are a few long-term symptoms associated with the psychology of traumatic brain injury victims:

  • Persistent anxiety and depression
  • Significant changes to personality
  • Compromised attention span
  • Reduction in time management ability

These are just a few of the long-term symptoms of TBI that are not physical. There are many others, such as unemployment, higher risk of suicide, and social isolation.
