Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: A Rare Condition

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy is the most rare form of the condition, causing muscle tremors as well as potential speech and oral problems.

Of all four types of Cerebral Palsy, Ataxic is the most rare form. This type only affects 5-10% of all those diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Caused by damage to the Cerebellum, this type can lead to speech problems as well tremors and muscle spasms. Here is some more information on Ataxic Cerebral Palsy.

Symptoms

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy can make it very difficult to carry out daily activities because it can affect all of our major limbs simultaneously. People with this type of CP typically have shaky arms and hands because of a lack of coordination. It can also be difficult for people to do things like write and clap their hands. Children with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy tend to have difficulty walking and can be prone to falling.

Speech & Oral Problems

Along with muscle tremors and spasms, people with Ataxic Cerebral Palsy may also have oral and speech problems as well. They may speak in a monotone voice that includes a fluctuation of pauses and rapid accelerations. Children with Ataxic CP typically struggle to swallow foods and liquids. This consequently may lead to digestive problems such as acid reflux.

Diagnosis

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy typically isn’t diagnosed until a child is around 18 months old. This is because the diagnosis is based on motor skills, which develop differently for each child. Ataxic CP is diagnosed through a clinical assessment where physicians will look for things like abnormal muscle tone, slow motor skills developments, and any family medical history.

Treatment

There is no cure for Ataxic CP, but there are treatment options that can help control the symptoms and improve quality of life.

  • Early Intervention Plan: The earlier you can begin treating your child for Ataxic Cerebral Palsy, the better. This allows them to begin physical and speech therapy early on which can help train their bodies and improve their developmental skills.
  • Therapy: Physical, speech, and occupational therapy are the three kinds that need to be given to children with Ataxic CP. These therapies are designed to help with social interactions, muscle strength, daily activities, and communication.
  • Medication: Primidone and other medications can be used to help treat the symptoms of Ataxic CP. These medications are typically used to help with the muscle tremors associated with the condition.
